5 Keys to Meditation

Meditation is not about stopping the mind, but observing our thoughts

What is going on in my mind right now? No judging, just chilling while you acknowledge your thoughts, either pleasant or unpleasant. Be aware of the sensations those thoughts generate, without reacting or holding on to them.

Find your own “meditation style"

Even though the famous lotus posture might be ideal for certain types of meditations, it’s not the only way of doing so. In fact, once you learn to observe your thoughts, you can meditate anywhere, anytime. Movement, mantra singing or guided meditations may be good choices for beginners.

Breath!

Focusing on your breath helps clear the mind and brings your attention away from the past and future, to right here and now with your body. There are many traditional ways to focus attention on your body, such as counting with the inhale and exhale, but you can be intuitive as well such as becoming aware of your belly or chest raising and falling. Becoming aware of your body posture and breath in the moment helps you to let go of any worries and overthinking, enabling your mind to concentrate and focus.

Dietary advice before meditation

It is easier to concentrate if your stomach is not full, so wait until you have digested your last meal before starting your meditation or do it as soon as you wake up. Your mind would be clearer then!

Find purpose

Set your intentions in order to remind yourself why you are meditating and what you would like to achieve with this practice.

Extra tip!

Consistency is the key. It does not matter if you don’t get it right the first time, as your mind will probably be unaccustomed to calmness. Meditation is a fitness! Be patient and keep on practicing the meditation you’ve chosen at least 5 minutes every day, soon the results will manifest in your life.

Meditation is beneficial because it:

  • Gives insight into how the mind really works
  • Reduces attachment, stress, and anxiety
  • Helps relaxation
  • Transforms the mind in a device to explore itself
  • Improves memory and concentration
  • Enhances creativity and new ideas
  • Boosts immune function
  • Helps processing emotions
  • Increases empathy and compassion
